Finally sold off my entire 80's Madonna/British pop record collection and I thought the pricing I received was pretty fair. They make the process of selling very easy and the staff was friendly and helpful. Afterwards I spent significant time in the DVD section and found a lot of great old movies and TV collections. I've spent hours in the CD collection in the past and they have many hard-to-find releases.
in 2012, i found out about amoeba music in california. as a 38 resident of las vegas, nevada i wish we had amoeba music stores here. the store at sunset and cahuenga also helped me complete my airwolf tv dvd set. that store is the greatest. jim caraway las vegas, nv
Amoeba has a great collection of vinyl from old to new

Provided by CitysearchMy go-to spot for Vinyl, Movies, and most recently: Band T-shirts. Nothing beats Amoeba.
My suggestion would be to just go in and experience Amoeba for yourself, I highly doubt that with the extraordinary selection they have for just about every type of movie, music, or randomness you can think of, that you will leave without something in your hands.
My favorite spots are the gigantic (as everything is in this store) 7 inch section (located in the back of the info counter) and the AS-IS DVD section (cheap movies that are guaranteed to play, with minor minor defects), where I always always find something...
Prices are usually always good for USED merchandise, for which they have a copious amount of... newer stuff is pricey, but it's to be expected, and the amount of amazingly priced used stuff I have gotten from Amoeba makes up for any high priced recent titles I may have splurged on.
Also, since I am a struggling college student, I lack funds, and Amoeba usually always gives me a good store credit deal when trading in my unwanted vinyl and movies.. I have left disappointed in what they have given me in trade a few times... but I won't count it against them!
GO TO AMOEBA!
p.s. FREE parking right next to the store for up to 2 hours... unbeatable for a place in Hollywood.

Provided by Citysearchi love this place. everyone who works there are avid music buffs and never ever steer you in the wrong direction. They take the time to ask you a few questions about your personal likes and the staff genuinely care about you satisfaction of finding a great new album or artist. I go there all the time to compliment their last recommendations to me. They really know how to treat customers and make loyal circles.
PS - check out the world music section and ask for their help. my greatest finds have been from that section mostly.
Whether you're searching for that obscure experimental jazz LP or just shopping for some DVDs, Amoeba Music is the place. It's massive and beautiful. The selection is great and the staff extremely helpful.
Amoeba is THE authentic music store in LA. Seems like one of the last places to buy a CD, and so much more. If you like music, you can get lost in here for hours...
This is a mini-city ... just stand outside on the sidewalk before it opens and you'll see an amazing number of employees arriving at this sprawling store in the heart of Hollywood. But I warn you: This place is addictive! I may go planning to spend 30 minutes there and end up spending 2 hours! And it's the home of SO many hard to find treasures. And there's a wonderful mixture of the old and the (unopened) new in both music and video. I had lost a treasured 2-CD set, and it was going to cost me nearly $30 (plus shipping) to RE-buy it on Amazon. But I found it at Amoeba for $9.99. And the staff is always ready to help. Obviously I love this place ... and I have NO connection to it beyond being a very satisfied customer.
[Note to yellowpages.com: I originally wrote this for Amoeba Music in Hollywood but it appeared on Amoeba in Santa Monica]
I have always been a huge music & movies fanatic and I was a Tower Records customer, I own about 1800 CD's, about 250 LD, 300 DVD's, 50 HD DVD's, 30 LP's, 2 MD's, & 5 Blue Ray Disc's. so you kind of get the picture of how much money I have spend over the years on media, not to mention equipment, Im on the A&V Business and that's my hobie as well, in 1999 a co worker mentioned "Amoeba" and told me I should buy from them, I where? she said AMOEBA!
You haven't heard about Amoeba? she was like, wow! Don't you know Amoeba is the best store in town? she wrotte the
Adress on a piece of paper and gave it to me, before I left she said... But what ever you do, don't bring with you what ever money you are not willing to spend....& she was absolutely right about everything, Amoeba is by far the best and now the only decent store standing still of it's kind, I love the selection and the fact that they carry absolutly all kinds of media, collectables, limited edition stuff and more.
The only thing that I don't like is their horrible return policy, so make sure that if you buy something you gonna keep it,
Also they need a more friendly staff, is hard to find help, is a lot easier to find securitys than associates wiling to help.
I still give them 4 stars & reconice them as the best in "Selection" yet I hope they work on their customer service.

Provided by CitysearchI can find scandanavian import black metal, and lost vinyl free jazz, in a matter of minutes, just a few feet away from each other. Upstairs, the movies are a little more chaotic, but, who cares with such a selection, and laser discs to boot, I mean, this place has everything. And then some
Holy moly, batman. This place is really big! I have been used to Virgin Records, Tower, and little mom & pop stores like Aaron's....so I always ran into that oh-so-familiar quote "Oh, I am sorry, we do not carry that title" by their customer service reps. But here, if it is not here, it doesn't exist! I am a big fan of underground hiphop and this place far exceeds my expectations. They have a huge selection of both used and new selections of hard to find underground hiphop. From MF DOOM to Jedi Mind Tricks to Necro. They have it. Not to mention, a huge selection of vinyl. As far as other music, there are rows and rows and rows of music. The Jazz room alone is larger than most music stores ! And their house music/techno vinyl selection is also pretty big. Wish i could tell you abuot each type of music but I only collect hiphop. But I am sure they have what you are looking for. And their dvd/vhs selection is great! You simply can't go wrong with place. I strongly suggest you park across the street and getting your parking ticket validated when you are done shopping. Last but not least, the personnel are very helpful and knowledgable. The hiphop staff really know their stuff.

Provided by CitysearchTHEE best and biggest record store I've EVER been in. Helpful and cheerful staff, who KNOW THEIR STUFF might I add. This store has anything, ANYTHING, I say!!!! You name it and more than likely, they've got it: Music from Senegal: Fatou Guewel, Orchestra Baobab, Fatou Laobe, Youssou N'Dour, Vivian N'Dour, underground hip hop: Mos Def/K-os/Common/Dilla, mainstream hip hop: JayZ/Kanye/Busta. World music of any kind: Enya, Feist, Portishead, Buena Vista Social Club. The biggest reggae selection I've seen, it's almost intimidating. Comedy albums (bought my deluxe Richard Pryor comedy album set there for a brilliant price). I mean I could go on and on and on. I love it and I feel so fortunate to be living in one of only 3 cities where this store calls home (SanFran & Berkeley). Awesome used cd's as well for excellent prices (bought my Van Hunt cd there for a cool $6.99!!! NOW BEAT THAT!) I stay buying their used cd's and I buy w/out testing it out to see if they'll skip because THEY NEVER DO. They guarantee their merchandise. I SIMPLY LOVE IT! I will forever be a loyal customer!
Amoeba has a great collection of vinyl from old to new. I'd recommend anyone to Amoeba.

Provided by CitysearchFor first-timers who think they've seen it all as far as CD stores go, your jaw will drop when you first enter Amoeba. I've been going there for years and I still get a chill when I look down upon the expansive CD floor from the second floor DVD section.
Their awesome, although sometimes pricey used section is the best in L.A. for harder to find titles. Sure, there's Second Spin for more accessible titles, but where else can you pick up the entire collection of Professionals (Steve Jones' and Paul Cook's post-Sex Pistols band) re-issues...in used condition no less?
Sure, there seems to be a tattoo and piercing requirement for all staffers, but when you finally tackle them, they can be pretty friendly. Saturdays are a complete madhouse, too.
Despite those minor drawbacks, Amoeba is a place I continue to visit on a weekly basis.

Provided by CitysearchI like Amoeba becuase they have a great selection of music (something for everyone) at a great price. It is also a funky and fun place that makes you feel like part of the LA in crowd. If you like music and haven't been here yet, you need to pay it a visit. (P.S. Sometimes bands come in and play in the store. Who knew shopping could become such a party?)

Provided by CitysearchThere is no other place in LA with this sort of variety in music, dvds, everything! I love classical music and this is the only place I can find the specific kinds that I enjoy. Even retail music stores dont provide that. I think its because people from around the world that live in LA sell their collections to this place and it makes it so diverse. I'm glad you're here!!!

Provided by CitysearchBrought in 300+ Lps in VG condition alot of Blues, Jazz, Soul, 60's, 70's Rock. After trading my licence 4 a dolly, and lugging up 6 boxes full w/o any help. 2Some jackars thumbed through them picked out about a hundred of the ones that were worth the most to them. I watched as he took out each selected lp checked both sides and replaced. No problem. He then started into his scripted routine about how they really didn't want the lps and how they weren't even worth buying? While he was examining the lps he told me this was gonna take a while hitting he didn't want me watchin him, I should've stayed. I wonder know how many of my records accidentally found their way onto another shelf. So while I was browsing through the lps for sale in the back I saw at least 2 dozen of the same lps he picked out which were priced more than 8.99 each! Mostly the rarer blues, Elvis and 1940's albums. After he offered me what amounted to about 15 cents for each record he had choosen, I laughed in his face told him to put them all back in the boxes. He then tried to pretend he was ignorant of the prices those exact same lps were selling for in his store! This after telling me he had worked there since before thay had opened! You should've seen the look on his face when I told him to put them back in their boxes, like a deer caught in headlights! HAHAHA He was so sure I was gonna just be like OK, whats the best you can do? The website states that if they are going to sell an LP for $5.00 they will pay you half that in cash? My math isn't that great, but 15 sents for an album they are selling for 9 dollars is not half! Fuqing Scam Artists, Avoid! They are nothin but crooks makin all their monry on the assumed ignorance of their clientel. I spiit on em! Hock! Pttt! Since then i had my little cousin list them as lots on ebay. I have made over $325 and counting! Simply by paying an honest person to do the legwork. Lesson Learned.

Provided by CitysearchI can literally stay in here for hours, browsing through cd's, old records, and dvd's. There's so much variety in there that the place can appeal to the indie junkie to the hip hop listener... Also the store workers are extremely knowledgable about music- they really know their stuff! They also have some in-store performances that are pretty awesome... I remember seeing Jenny Lewis there a few years back~

Provided by CitysearchWith the advent of online purchasing of music, I really don't see much point in buying CDs here anymore. My DJ friend comes here alot to parouse their selection of vintage vinyl, and sometimes I'll spot something in their DVD section that I'd just buy online later, but I think Amoeba has seen better days. I've never been able to park underground and have had to use a metered street parking spot a couple blocks away on a side street.
