The Perfect Ham Sandwich.
Always consistent, great Ham and Cheese. Pea soup tops off the meal. Quick service very friendly staff. Can't wait to go back
It was great. The service and atmosphere was great. we spent a good time there. The food was very delicious and appealing. Perfectly cooked and smoked.!!!!
One of my favorite spots in Los Angeles. Love their food. Worth coming back to. Food and drinks are cheap for what you're getting.
Love the food here. The place have a really good vibes to it and the people here are very accommodating and kind.
The food is delicious and I like the fact that their food is well cooked. The price is also very affordable.
Best French Dip ever and consistenly good.

Provided by CitysearchI found this joint on the food network a few years back and have been back here ever since then.
This place is popular for their french dips, so if you don't like french dips, then you probably will just be ok with this place. Sometimes the line is long (5 or 6 people), and sometimes there is nobody in line, so it all depends.
French dips (beef, pork, lamb) are very good. Ask them to do the double dip (double dip= buns are dipped in the juice twice). Even if you do not like the soggy bread, you should try this.
Must get the pickled beets and pickled eggs! They are so... good. Eggs are pickled in pickled beets juice.

Provided by CitysearchOur food came out on time and was prepared just right. I would recommend this place to a hungry person the portions are huge! Service as ok but the food made up for it! I?d go here again for sure.

Provided by CitysearchFirst bite ""Amazing."" Second bite ""Pure Joy."" Third bite ""Will You Marry me?"" To eat Phillippe's is to love Phillippe's. The recipe is simple... Get some amazingly tender roast beef. Check. Slam it down onto a crispy french roll. Check. Dunk that french roll into some ""Dip"" - the greatest thing known to man. Check Mate.... And let the children sing. Slight exaggeration? Maybe..... but not much. When you've tried it, you'll understand. Come into Philippe's any time of day and you'll always be greeted with the same... 10 lines 10 people deep, rows upon rows of family style tables, saw dust on the floor, and most importantly, sweet old ladies in light brown dresses dipping their hearts away. But equally important, load up your tray with some old fashioned macaroni salad, one giant pickle, a slice of apple pie, and an old school tiny glass of lemonade, and you're on your way. Exploring for a table is almost half the fun, walking through the labyrinth of hallways and rooms, strolling up stairs where you swear the layout must have been from a 1912 elementary school. Wherever you choose to sit, settle down with the worlds greatest french dip and squeeze on just a little of there super-spicy horseradish mustard (you've been warned, don't come after us when your brain wants to exit your body through your nose). It's no wonder the place has been packed for right around a century, put simple, the place has Good Grub. See more at www.thegoodgrub.weebly. com

Provided by CitysearchIf you're looking for an amazing, cheap French Dip, Philippe's is the place. The originator of the French Dip (yes, you heard me right), Philippe's is perfect right before a Dodger game! But get there early, as the lines can get REALLY long before Dodger Games!
For dessert, get the Banana Cream Pie. It's AWESOME!

Provided by CitysearchI believe this is the only place that serves french-dip sandwiches. Good lamb sandwich but it does not taste lamby. Cole slaw is good, too.
The cons: the service is inconsistent--sometimes good and sometimes bad. And the brownies--yech! Totally skip it!

Provided by CitysearchBreakfast is good. Lunch is good. so is dinner.
Gets a bit crowded and the prices are immune to the economy but all in all, its a great place to get a good french dip that won't break the bank, and to get a good slice of chocolate cream pie.
Don't smell the mustard, just dab a bit on and take a bite. If you inhale it, you'll not only clear out your sinuses but you might end up clearing out your tear ducts too.
I always get the same thing, double dip beef sandwich, with a side of mac salad. (with a lemonade)
for breakfast its two eggs any style with corn beef. (with a cup o joe)
if i need something to take the edge off my sweet tooth, it'll be the chocolate cream pie.
go here for breakfast, walk around olvera street, stop by the walt disney music hall, and union station, mosey over to chinatown for lunch, or reverse the order and you've got a great day in downtown la.

Provided by Citysearchplenty of parking- the Roast Beef dip with cheese is a real treat!!! the only problem I have with the place is most of the time you get a rude or snotty sandwich clerk. I keep getting the tall blonde that has an attitude- I gotta stop standing in her line!! LOL other than that!!! THE DIPS ROCK!!!!

Provided by CitysearchI went for the first time yesterday, and it was really, really good. Just yum. Everyone hates on the beef dip, but I had that-- I think asking for ""double dip"" is a must-- and it was really good. The lamb was also good, but it was a little salty for my taste. Of all the sides, I found the cole slaw to be good, but the potato salad to be better. I say go. You'll like it.

Provided by Citysearchnot traditional as it was back in the day, small two slices roast beef with bread, did they pay food network off to show a large back in the day sandswich? big joke, go to chinatown right behind restaurant

Provided by CitysearchTheir sandwiches aren't that filling by themselves, but they are fairly good. Maybe a little too expensive (OK, 9 cent coffee is nice). Tasty hot mustard on the tables. Worth it once in a great while to eventually make your way to the counter when it's busy to order.
100 years later and Philippe's is still making great sandwiches. I also highly recommend the pies.
