I tasted like a real Japanese shushi! Top notched taste and the price is very affordable. It's a must try for sushi lover.
Since my last review many years ago, I decided to update on Sushi Gen. I am happy to report that the quality of the food here has not changed. It's as good as ever. So I would say that it's still Little Tokyo's best sushi restaurant, and certainly the most crowded, since sometimes you will wait up to 90 minutes to get seated.
One time I sat at the bar to eat an omakase meal, which included everything from toro to mirugai. However, most of the time I would come for lunch and dinner eating their sashimi special. This is the most popular lunch item menu, which for $19.50, you get sashimi, soup, cabbage salad, and simmered tofu. This deal was cheaper before, but still reasonable for its price. It's like food to your soul, and the sashimi they use in this platter is simply delicious. You simply can't miss out on it, especially if you are a fan of sashimi. This is probably the most popular sashimi in Los Angeles.
I recently did a YouTube video on Sushi Gen, on my channel Rockstar Eater, if you want to see an overview of the restaurant and of course this sashimi lunch deal. I would recommend this place
Had a great experience here. The food is great and very fresh. Probably the best sushi I've had since moving to LA from Boston. Really good and recommended.
Excruciating wait, with no reservations (always hour+), but amazing sushi. Their sashimi special is a HUGE amount of fish at an amazing price.

Provided by CitysearchToday was a disappointment. We had a party of 5, but my brother in-law was pulling into the parking lot and we 4 of us sat first. They notice we were missing one of 5 and said, we can't sit you. We were already sat down and he gave us a minute. I went outside to get him and by the time I get back, the host asked my folks and sister get up and wait. He gave our tables to another party of 3. I was so upset. He said it's not fair to sit us when all party was not here and it was only 2 minutes. He made us get off the table and made us wait another 15-20 minutes for another table. The food was always premium, I come here enough times, given very generous gratuity every single time. So, basically he can be unfair to us, but he doesn't want to be unfair to others. We were embarrassed and people saw us sat down and get up after 2-3 minutes sitting down. This is the worst service from a restaurant host ever. Despite the disrespectful host, I still gave my fair gratuity today because the rest of the service is fine and I don't like making others suffer because of one uneducated idiot.

Provided by CitysearchI go to all the ""best"" sushi restaurants in town often: Nozawa, Sasabune, Zo, Mori, etc....
Gen is straightforward. The fish is fresh and they give you a nice hunk of fish.

Provided by CitysearchFood is amazing. Every time I come here, I feel like I never want to leave. Very chic atmosphere with a relaxing mood.
The service is great and the staff really does a terrific job at taking care of you.
The appetizers are delicious.
Theres plenty of places to park: theres a parking lot across the street and a parkin garage up the street within walking distance.
Most of the time I find myself looking at my watch waiting for the food to come, but here I was so entertained with the fun atmosphere that I was pleasantly surprised when my food arrived

Sushi gen is one of the best Sushi place if you are looking for good quality at reaasonable price. One of the best thing is their lucnh special. The quality is great and the price is like $15 to $20 to have a sushi combo. Love it!

Provided by CitysearchThis food is a little pricey for what it is, however, if you are feeling sushi tonight and you are in LA, there is no better place

Provided by CitysearchHands down my favorite sushi restaurant to go to. Freshest and best quality sushi in the LA area. Try to go for dinner as the lines for lunch are ridiculous.

Provided by CitysearchThe sushi is always fresh here and the service is good. I always enjoy sitting at the sushi bar bc I know I will be well taken care of.
The Chirashi bowl lunch special is worth the trip to dtla! But come before it open or after the lunch rush!! If not, you will have to wait!

Provided by CitysearchI love downtown...they always have restaurants that have good quick lunch specials...but if you're ever in the hollywood area...Club Sushi is a good place too.

Provided by CitysearchThe food here is terrific and the service is usually pretty good. I've been here with my friends quite a few times and they all loved it. The only downside is the long wait during dinner hours and the atmosphere is only mediocre. Sushi Gen is amazing nonetheless.

Provided by CitysearchI lived in Japan for 14 years, and almost gave up that there is no Sushi that came close to what I use to eat in Japan. Many Sushi place ran by Korean people here in SoCal. (I'm not being racst, i'm Korean) But Sushi men at Korean owned Sushi place don't really know how to make real sushi, unless they went Japan to be trained. In Japan, minimum length of training to be a Sushi men is 3 years. 1st year they don't even allow you to touch rice. But here...Sushi men starts working right away without any proper training.(i know it because two of my friends are in this business). Some generous person treated me to this Sushi Gen last year, and me and my friend ordered almost all the sushi at Sushi Gen. And Boy~! This is closest I have had worthy to call it Sushi. This generous gentlemen treated me and my friends (12 of us) and came out to be $750 (including $120 tips..he was very generous). So yea, don't know if I can go there again due to it's price...but definitely great Sushi. Oh I do have to say that just because Sushi place is ran by Japanese owner and Japanese Sushi Men does not mean they are great Sushi. If you happen to stop by San Francisco, never go to Tsunami (number 1 Sushi in San Francisco by CitySearch). Although it is owned by Japanese people and Japanese Sushi Men...these Sushi men definitely never had any training. I got so mad that they sell those awful things as Sushi. Anyway...just couldn't help but say this everywhere on City Search.

Provided by CitysearchMy boy mentioned this place to me a few times and finally took me there. It was his first time going there too. It was a week night and the place was crowded. They sat us immediately at the sushi bar as we had requested. We got ""Omakase style"" and we were truly satisfied with everything the sushi chef served us. We love uni and I have to really give this place 5 stars for the delicious uni that they have. All of sushi there is amazing. We left there oh so satisfied. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. That is how good it is. From the service to the food. Yum yummy yum.

Provided by CitysearchWe finally tried this hidden jewel in Little Tokyo. When we arrived, there was a long wait, but we were told it was always like that. Once we sat for dinner, everything was smooth sailing. Everything we had was amazing besides the miso soup. The fish was so fresh and cut perfectly. I'm jonesing to go back as I'm writing this review. Yum!
