Urinary incontinence is the unwanted loss of urinary control. It has been estimated that 35 percent of women over 65 experience some form of urinary leakage.

Dr. Vogt has held national positions with the American College of Surgeons, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Urogynecologic Society. In addition, she has been a Board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has performed clinical research and published numerous journal articles and book chapters in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Val Vogt has practiced urogynecology in Memphis for over 15 years. She attended medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois and completed her internship at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. She began specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology during Residency Training at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.. Following her specialized residency training program she completed a three year fellowship at at Indiana University/ Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, the first accredited program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Vogt moved to Memphis and held the position of Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. She has also been Clinical Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Labor and Delivery
Many medical textbooks describe kidney stone pain as the worst type of pain–even worse than childbirth. Kidney stones are a common and often painful problem. Mid-Southerners live in the heart of the ‘kidney stone belt’, a dubious distinction in that people in this region have a higher incidence of developing urinary stones than people living in other regions of the country.

Interstitial Cystitis
Urinary Tract Infection
Blood in the urine, or hematuria, is one of the most common conditions that a urologist will evaluate. Blood in the urine is very common, but never normal. Whether it involves grossly bloody urine or just a microscopic trace, the need for evaluation is the same. By far, the most common cause of hematuria is a simple urinary tract infection, but it is also very important to remember that traces of blood in the urine may be the only early sign of more complicated underlying diseases, even cancers. Don’t try to convince yourself that the bloody urine is not important. Even if it is painless, and even if it goes away on its own, it is still a significant event and your doctor needs to sort it out.
Prostate Cancer
As with many cancers, the most important aspect of prostate cancer is early detection. If the cancer is caught early, before it can spread, then cure rates are excellent. Because early prostate cancer does not give any reliable signs or symptoms, annual screening is critical to detect the developing cancer. Screenings need to be done every year after age 40. African Americans and patients with a family history of prostate cancer have a higher risk for developing prostate cancer. At the Conrad Pearson Clinic, our experienced urologists perform annual exams and PSA blood tests as a routine part of our practice. Lots of different factors are used when deciding which course of treatment is best for each prostate cancer case.

Multiple Sclerosis
Many times, a urinary tract infection may cause all of the symptoms of an overactive bladder. However, blood in the urine, whether visible or microscopically detected, needs evaluation. Though the underlying cause of OAB is unknown, the nervous system is thought to play an important role in the irritability and overactivity of the bladder. Processes such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, which affect the nervous system, can initially present with urinary complaints.

Mental Health
SENSITIVE INFORMATION: Sensitive information (such as HIV/AIDs or other communicable disease, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment information) is protected under state and federal law. We will provide sensitive information to the HIE but will put into place protections to help prevent the disclosure of sensitive information to those other than your treating providers, their workforce members and business associates; however, because sensitive information cannot be completely isolated or removed from other medical information, there is a chance that sensitive information (or information that could indicate you have had treatment for a sensitive condition) could be included within your medical information. Therefore, if you are concerned at all about a certain piece of medical information being known, we strongly recommend you tell us you do not want your information in the HIE. In other words, you should "opt-out" of participation.

Ultrasound
If the infections are difficult to clear or recur, your urologist will often test further to see if there is an underlying cause. The simplest tests are simple and determine the actual type of bacteria and which antibiotics will be effective for your infection. Additional evaluation by x-rays, which may include a kidney ultrasound, IVP (intravenous pyelogram) or CT scan, gives information about the anatomy of your urinary tract. Kidney stones, blocked kidneys, and bladder malformations are common things that doctors look for with these tests. Sometimes cystoscopy, where a small scope is inserted into your bladder through the opening of the urethra, is performed. X-Rays
Computed Tomography
A urodynamic test measures the bladder’s ability to store and empty urine. Urodynamics attempts to recreate what happens when your bladder fills normally. Quite a bit of information is collected, and the study will assist a doctor in deciding how they wish to treat a patient’s problem. Urodynamics is the urologist’s best way to determine the function of a patient’s bladder. Other tests, such as cystoscopy or CT scan, can be used to assess the anatomy of the bladder.
Chemotherapy
Radiation Therapy
For many people, especially young individuals or those who have a life expectancy of greater than ten years, curative therapy is recommended. For the elderly or those who have lots of medical issues, non-curative management options that control the cancer, but not cure it, may be reasonable options so that these people can live out their normal life expectancy while hopefully avoiding complications of the cancer as well as potentially risky cancer treatments. Curative treatment options include radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and Cryotherapy. Non–curative management options include watchful waiting and hormone deprivation therapy.

General Surgery
Dr. Patrick Zielie, MD, attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, where he received his Bachelor of Biology, Summa Cum Laude with honors in 1993, and his Doctorate of Medicine in 1998, from Boston University School of Medicine, in Boston, MA. He did six years of general surgery and urology training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, MA. He has several publications on urology topics. His interests include all areas of urology with special interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgeries. He is a member of the American Urological Association and Southeastern Section. He is American Board of Urology certified.
Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a simple procedure for permanent male birth control. Because vasectomy is minimally invasive and can be performed without general anesthesia, it has become the preferred method of permanent birth control. Nothing, except abstinence from sex altogether, is more reliable. The risk of pregnancy following proper vasectomy is approximately 1 in 100,000.
Robotic Surgery
He has practiced urology in Memphis since 2014, serving as the Chief of Pediatric Urology at St. Jude for over 7 years. He is currently specializing in general adult urology, and all facets of pediatric urology including neurogenic bladder and bowel, reconstructive procedures, hypospadias, hydronephrosis, undescended testicles, hernias and minimally invasive/robotic surgery.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Granieri has numerous publications and award-winning presentations to his credit. Most recently, he was awarded Best Video in Male Reconstructive Surgery at the 2018 AUA Annual Meeting. He remains a reviewer for several journals, including the Journal of Urology. Dr. Granieri is a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the American Urologic Association.
