Everytime I've been to Abuelo's we've

Everytime I've been to Abuelo's we've always recieved top notch service, food, and atmosphere. Resteraunt is always busy.

Lost Quality

Atmosphere is decent and wait staff is adequate but the food was not very good. First and foremost Abuelo's is way too spicy for the most folks in the Phoenix area. There is only one salsa and is hot. Most Mexican food places have a choice of at least two salsas: hot and mild (pico de gallo).
For each choices we had tonight the food tasted like it was laden with cayenne pepper. Nothing was flavorful. The sad thing is in the past this restaurant offered flavorful meals with a low amount of added spice.
Bottom line is I could not eat my enchiladas, retried beans or the Mexican rice. The owner ship needs to get a clue of whom they are catering to.

Abuelo's Terrible Service Embassy

I wish i was able to provide a review about the food but we left before ordering. The service was awful! We sat for 20 minutes (not an exaggeration) without recognition from the server. We even approached the hostess and manger, who both went to speak to the server, but she still ignored us. 3 other tables sat by us, only one of which she decided to serve.... so we left. The restaurant was nearly empty, but even if it was busy a little 'hey ill be right back"" would make things okay. One bad experience is enough for us. There are plenty of other good businesses that deserve our money. DO NOT waste your time on this place.

Terrible Food at Abuelos

This was my first time eating at Abuelos and certainly my last. I test the Chile Relleno at every restaurant in Arizona that offers it and theirs was certainly the worst. The food came as essentially soup on a plate. The dish was completely flat with no differentiation between the beans, papas con chiles, or cheese, running together in one soupy mess. It looked like it was microwaved preprepared, and when asked the waitress stated the dishes are made the morning of and reheated when ordered. Even if you're ordering dinner it was made that morning, so it's not fresh and not made to order. The Chile Relleno itself was about 3 inches big, the smallest Chile Relleno I've seen. 90% of the plate was the side dish mush. If you want a great Chile Relleno in Arizona and great food in general, I recommend El Encanto in Cave Creek, Arizona or Z'Tejas in Scottsdale, but definitely avoid Abuelos.

Great Food

Abuelo's was recommended to us by our realtor when my husband and I were here from Oregon. We loved it!! The food was great, the service was awesome, and the atmosphere was beautiful. Since then we have taken my parents there when they came down to visit and our kids always choose to go there when we are trying to decide where to go out to eat. Everything that we have ever eaten was awesome. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Great food and service

My wife and I ate dinner here on March 30 of 07 and found the service prompt (even though the place was packed) and the food was outstanding. The chips are thin, the salsa flavorful, but not too hot, and the entrees were superb.

This has become our favorite Mexican restaurant here in the Phoenix area.

Horrible service.

My wife and I just walked out of this place in disgust. We came to Abuelo's because we heard the food was good. When we walked in we asked for a table for 2. The hostess we were speaking to asked the hostess to her right to seat us at table 82. We walked all the way to the back right hand side of the restaurant passing several people enjoying their meals and 2 empty booths on the way to a dark corner table. I asked the hostess if we could please be seated in one of the 2 unoccupied booths behind us which were better lit and away from the wait staff service station. She said very rudely.. ""We don't have a server working that area.? I politely asked ""Who is serving the people we passed in the booths right next to the one we are requesting?"" She starred blankly and didn't answer. She then proceeded to grab the excess place settings and mumbled ""Enjoy your meal"" and walked away. Snobby service cannot be made up for by the food. Upscale or not, you don't treat new or return customers badly. There is no excuse for this hostess. My wife and I will NEVER again consider eating at this restaurant. There are numerous restaurants in the area that want your business and are willing to go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. Choose any of these restaurants to spend your money. Abuelo's is not worth your time. Date visited: 3/23/07 3:45PM.

Good food and experience

My wife, our two girls, (ages 3 1/2 and 1) and I decided to give this new restaurant a try and we are glad that we did. The ambience is wonderful and the facility and staff are very kid friendly. Our two girls were being a bit antsy, therefore, we were not able to fully appreciate the total experience. My wife ordered an enchilada plate which she stated was excelent; I ordered steak and enchilada, which was very good! During our visit they had just introduced a new appetizer (can't remember what the name is) that we ordered and it was yummy. The service was above average. We plan to visit Abuelo's again soon.

This place simply rocks! The MOST expensive platter is under $19...a steal for food of this quality! The house specials are expecially worthy. Los Mejores De La Casa is divine and the Papas Con Chile is excellent! Unfortunately you can only make reservations for large parties and this can lead to an hour+ wait..especially in winter. So don't be too hungry when you arrive!

prefer loud & bright? come on in

the accustics are awful. could not hear the person across the table for me, but i could hear every other conversation in stereo. the sheer volume of the restaurant is enough to send anyone to the audiologist. service....bleh. but if i had to work in that environment, maybe i too would be so over-stimulated i too could not give good service.

Abuelo's is the way to go

Having lived in the Phoenix Metro area since 1979, my idea of ""Mexican Food"" was your typical chain restaurant. I was skeptical the first time I was invited to go, but that one time was all it took. Their margaritas have liquor in them, their chips are thin and crispy, and the salsa is the best I have ever tried. The beautiful decor and original music make for a wonderful ambience. The service we received rivaled some of the best restaurants in town. I have dined there at least once a week since they opened in Peoria. They also opened by some friend's house in Chandler and also in Scottsdale.

a good experience

I dont know what place the single mother who submitted a bad review on this site went to but it wasnt here. The menu is not the run of the mill. The food was excellent and there was a lot of it. The service was good. The prices were a lot lower than I expected for the type of quisine they serve. I had the Mahi Mahi and it was fresh and delicious! Our out of state visitors were very impressed. We plan to return often.

This place is awesom

I eat at this resturant 2 or 3 times a month. The atmosphere is wonderful, the service is great, and the food is better. Abuelo's should be much higher in the list. Also, try gardunio's, they have some of the best tex-mex and mexican in the state. Locations in Chandler and Scottsdale.

You call this mexican food?

I heard alot about this restaurant. How beautiful the place was, how good the food was, and a great price. Well, I am a single mom of two and the value of the meals was attrocious! It cost me $35.00 for three meals, but the price was not the worst of it. They were stingy on the chips and salsa, also on the food placed on an oversized plate. If you aren't going to give people very much food then you should put it in a smaller plate to at least make it look bigger. The tacos were made with ground beef so heavily seasoned with chili powder that they tasted as though they were made with hormel chili, and then shells were prefabs not freshly fried with the meat inside. The enchiladas were more of the same just covered with sauce. No thanks we won't be going there anymore.
